Sleeper got single of the week with the rude and raucous “Delicious”…
>>> SINGLE OF THE WEEK Review by Dave Jennings SLEEPER DELICIOUS (Indolent) ONE of the many truly delicious things about this record is the thought of the poor innocents who’ll hear it, fall in love with it for its energy, its upbeat jangly-guitar attack and its sex appeal - and then realise, a little later, exactly what Louise Wener is singing. “Delicious” would be a touch subversive even if it were merely what it appears to be at first - a totally shameless declaration of rampant lust. After all, Madonna notwithstanding, this degree of sexual aggression still isn’t something that nice female stars go in for. Listen more closely and you discover that the invitation Wener is extending is a lot more sinister than it initially appears - “We should both go to bed ‘til we’ve made each other sore.. / We should both get away and explore our darkest dreams/We should both find a place where no one can hear our screams.” As someone once wailed: this is not a love song. It is a record that breaks lots of the cosy, airbushed, MTV-friendly pop world’s unwritten rules, gloriously. In the middle of all the hypocrisy and dishonesty in the “alternative” music world, we desperately need talented troublemakers like Sleeper. |
