Sleeper: Little Annie

posted Nov 26, 2012, 11:59 AM by Vu Nguyen

Little Annie
Don't come around, acting so feeble
It's much too late to talk to you people
She knows, she knows what's happening
And like a woman she explodes
She knows what's happening

She cut off her fingers to keep them from itching
She sewed up her eyes to stop them from twitching
She's eating the dirty again like a monkey
She's flat on her back, oh yes
Wasted and glad, oh yes
Lost in a bend, she's gone 'round it

Don't come around, I feel so ugly
I'd like to punch someone and I'm hungry
Little Annie says she knows
She knows what's going on
And like a woman she explodes
She's knows what's going on

She cut off her fingers to keep them from itching
She sewed up her eyes to stop them from twitching
She's eating the dirty again like a monkey
She's flat on her back, oh yes
Wasted and glad, oh yes
Lost in a bend, she's gone 'round it

Sleeper: Little Annie

I'm in the process of moving, so I've been packing things up in boxes. I was working on my magazines, when I took a break and started flipping through them. The memories started flooding back, what good times these were. I fear that in today's word, how are you going to reminisce about an old article?

Believe it or not, but before the internet took over, most of my news and attention to bands were all thanks to magazines. I stopped buying magazines altogether because, let's be honest: they are expensive. Plus, all the cool magazines (Select, Q, Mojo, Uncut) are based in the UK and getting a subscription to it was way, way expensive.

To justify many of my mags purchases, it would have to include a compilation CD or if there was a band I really, really love on its cover. Usually this meant Britpop-related bands, like my most obsessed band in the 90s, Sleeper.

I love everything that Sleeper released, collected all the albums and singles (on various formats, CD, 7", 12", cassingles). I had it bad, and it was worst being in the U.S. Everything came out to us late, and we never got to see all the cool music videos or various television appearances.

I saw Sleeper twice: 1995 and 1996. The first time was the best time. Mel and I got to interview Louise Wener and Andy McClure. We met the rest of the band in the green room of the Whiskey A-Go-Go. The second time was also unforgettable; they opened up for Elvis Costello. All good times.

When their third album came out in 1997, it was pretty much over: Britpop died an early death and indie labels like Indolent Records were swallowed up by bigger companies or just went out of business.

The song I'm using is "Little Annie", a B-Side from their Inbetweener UK single. The song was also collected in a US promo-only EP called B-Sides, which BMG gave to radio stations. At the time, I was volunteering at KFSR 90.7 FM, so I own the rare EP in my massive Sleeper music collection.

Below are, what I I believe these are the only magazine covers that Louise Wener/Sleeper appeared on. I have various other inset covers and one-pager, but these are the magazines that she clearly is featured on the cover. If I am missing any, please email me. I would like to know why I'd missed them, and I'll probably try and spend my time on collecting the final covers to complete my sad, sad Sleeper collection.

Front Row - Untouchable review, Louise Wener interview, Ryszard Kapuscinski biography
BBC Radio 4, 7:15PM Fri, 21 Sep 2012

With Kirsty Lang.

Untouchable, a French comedy film about a wealthy disabled man and his young impoverished carer, has proved an unlikely hit across Europe, even taking more than Avatar in some countries. Critic Agnes Poirier explains its unexpected popularity and delivers her verdict.

Shout To The Top is a new music drama coming to BBC Radio 2, about a young girl band starting out in the 1980s. Writers Roy Boulter, drummer of The Farm, and Louise Wener, former singer with the Britpop band Sleeper, discuss how they set about creating radio drama and how far they drew on their own experiences of the music industry.

The Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski was one of the most influential eyewitness reporters of the 20th century. Artur Domoslawski has written a new biography which examines the complex relationship between fact and fiction in Kapuscinski's work. He describes his feelings when he realised that he was going to have to be critical of his friend, whom he greatly admired.

As Radio 4 broadcasts the 10 short stories competing for the £15,000 BBC International Short Story Award, Front Row talks to each of the writers. Today, Miroslav Penkov discusses East Of The West, which will be broadcast on Monday at 3.30pm.

Producer Stephen Hughes.

Britpop Glee?

BRITPOP GLEE?
bbc.co.uk

"Shout to the Top" is a new BBC Radio 2 production about a fictional all-female band to air on September 25th. The star of the program, Shane Richie, described the musical drama as "Glee for an older audience."

Music Weekly described the program as a "'Britpop Glee", because creator Jeff Smith was quoted to say, "Attempts like Britannia High didn’t quite get it right. Ours is grittier [than that] but is still a British take on Glee, for an older audience."

Britpop fans will notice that "Shout to the Top" is co written by ex-Sleeper's Louise Wener and former The Farm's drummer Roy Boulter.

CAMPING MAGAZINE (Apr 2012)
New look for Camping magazine
Posted on 26 Jan 2012 by Iain Duff

The UK's only magazine devoted to tent campers is to get a brand new look.

The April 2012 issue of
Camping magazine will hit the shelves on 1 March as a 100-page issue, packed full of campsites, tents, travel ideas and reviews.

Also free with this issue is the annual Campsite Map to help plan your 2012 camping trip.

Features in the April issue will include 20 sites with the WOW factor, ex-Britpop star Louise Wener camping in Brittany, campsite cooking with the Guyrope Gourmet and lots more gear, skills, sites and travel.

Camping editor Iain Duff said: “Thanks to the economic gloom, more and more people are spending their holidays at home, meaning camping has never been more popular – especially among families looking for a memorable but affordable holiday experience. With so many newcomers to the market, we believe now is the right time to give the magazine a fresh new look.

Camping magazine is written by campers for campers so we know what our readers want. It’s a fun, friendly pursuit and we want to reflect that in the pages of the magazine.”

The magazine will be on sale across the UK in branches of WH Smith, Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Morrisons as well as newsagents. It can also be bought or pre-ordered from our website campingmagazine.co.uk
